What are Saiyans?

Saiyans are one of the most powerful races from the Dragon Ball series, and based on the series, they are known for their exceptional strength, combat skills, and ability to transform into stronger forms. Also, to your surprise saiyans are not humans… even though they have a human-like figure, they are originally from a different planet called Planet Vegeta (a planet named after the king of the planet).

History:

As I mentioned earlier, the Saiyans originate from Planet Vegeta, a harsh world with high gravity that helped them develop incredible strength and combat skills.

On Planet Vegeta, all the male Saiyans were warriors, carrying out tasks based on orders and living peacefully. However one day, the tyrant Frieza destroyed the whole planet out of fear of their growing power, wiping out most of the Saiyan race.

Thus, the survivors, like Goku and Vegeta, became central characters in the Dragon Ball saga.

Physical Traits:

Even though they are almost like humans with a humanoid figure, there are a few additional details that need to be mentioned. The surprising trait of a Saiyan is the tail they possess from birth. Due to their planet’s high gravity, Saiyans have a naturally muscular build, which contributes to their enhanced physical strength and combat ability.

What’s surprising about their traits is that their hair can change color depending on the form they take. Additionally, based on their transformation, their hair can also grow and return to its normal state once they revert to their original form.

Saiyans typically have black or dark brown eyes, though there are exceptions in some transformations (e.g., in Super Saiyan forms).

Abilities:

Now here comes my favorite part about Saiyans… yes, I’m talking about their ability to transform into different forms, like Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God, and many more. Even without the transformation, they possess unnatural strength and healing abilities that surpass any regular humans. Saiyans are natural-born fighters, skilled in hand-to-hand combat and energy manipulation, allowing them to perform powerful attacks like the Kamehameha and Final Flash.

One of their most unique traits is the Zenkai Boost, which allows them to grow stronger after recovering from near-death experiences. Saiyans also have the ability to transform into a Great Ape (Oozaru) if they still have their tail and are exposed to a full moon, greatly boosting their power. Additionally, they can fly using their ki. However, their tail also has a weakness: if it is grabbed or attacked, it can incapacitate them and prevent their Great Ape transformation.

How to create your own Saiyan names?

For example, you can start by choosing a root word related to strength, power, or battle, since Saiyans are all about power and battles. After selecting a root word you can use words from different languages that signify these traits, like Karu (strong), Roku (warrior), or Goro (brave).

Another method is to use wordplay or puns based on vegetables or fruits, as many Saiyan names in Dragon Ball are derived this way. For instance, Kakarot comes from “carrot” and Vegeta comes from “vegetable.” You can apply this approach to other foods or items associated with growth or strength, like Brocco (broccoli), Chard (swiss chard), or Onio (onion).
